Traditional hardwired fire alarm systems use fire rated cable to connect the devices (smoke detectors, call point, etc.) on the system to the fire alarm panel.

A wired fire alarm system has no batteries in the devices to change, but in the event of a power failure there is a back-up battery in the system equipment.

Wired fire alarm system do not rely on radio signals between the control panel and the devices reducing the risk of interference.

System types:

Conventional systems require physical zoning of the premises being protected, the system requires separate cables for the sounder and detection circuits.  Each alarm device in the zone is wired back to the fire alarm panel, when the detector or call point goes into alarm the fire alarm panel will indicate the zone in alarm but not which device it is in the zone.

Analogue addressable systems each device (smoke detectors, call point, sounder, etc.) is wired directly on a loop to the fire alarm panel. When a device goes into alarm the fire alarm panel will indicate the zone in alarm plus which device and its location has gone into alarm.

Analogue addressable systems are ideal for large premises or where the precisely location of the activated device is needed.

Two-wired fire alarm system are similar to conventional systems but instead of using separate cables for the sounder and detection circuits they use the same cable.
